How Happiness is a Choice

The Sacred Choice

The essence, and maybe even the entirety of ‘spiritual awakening’ can be summed up as this: the moment one remembers that one can in fact just choose to be happy now, and that that is in fact all that is needed.

The apparent spiritual progression, is really a regression; a perpetual return to this wisdom and insight.

A ceaseless need to return to the sacred “oh yeah, I can choose to come out of this misery!”

The master is he who has just decided to be deeply committed, again and again, to this simple wisdom: suffering is a choice.

I myself struggle to stay committed to this understanding, and I know I am not alone. The grip of suffering can be so strong in us that hopelessness, helplessness and powerlessness easily plague our life, veiling the truth of this wisdom.

Some of us, in our commitment to inner growth, maintain our awareness on our suffering hoping an insight may liberate us.

But often, because when suffering does dissolve, and because this just happens in a causeless kind of way, which feels like and can indeed be called ‘Grace’, we think that when suffering arises again, we must sit as the witness; waiting for the suffering that we observe to suddenly magically dissolve into peace or happiness.

Though this is not bad, with this alone, we forget about the power of our choice, and our ‘witness practice’ can slowly decline into a helpless and endless mere watching of our suffering, which can often do nothing more than to increase it. Where focus goes energy flows!

We forget that inner growth involves choice, and so we confuse knowledge of the power of Grace, and the memory of previous effortless ‘happenings’, with a lack of the ability to just choose.

The nature of this choice is indeed a kind of surrender, for it is not a push against the suffering. But it is also not a pure helpless yielding or resignation. There is a space in between hopeless yielding and conscious decision in which lies true surrender, which is a kind of fusion of both.

With this true surrender comes the rebirth of our permission to choose, and re-choose, a path free of suffering.

And as such, we are indeed ‘yielding’, but to another flow of Life entirely.

The shift from a painful destructive consciousness to a nurturing and happy consciousness ‘happens by grace’. But it’s happening is preceded by a conscious and chosen “Yes”.

From an unconscious universal “No!”, we shift to a conscious universal “Yes!”

And resistance dissolves into a receptive, self-emptying and ever-expansive Flow of love, intelligence and happiness beyond understanding. This Flow is the biblical “peace of God, which passeth all understanding.” (Philippians 4:7)

It all comes back to that simple, but so very sacred Choice.

Therefore,

May we remember to not strive to make our states of happiness permanent, for we know this is impossible.

We decide rather to stay committed to inner wisdom and return endlessly to the truth of our power to Choose happiness Now, and to return to the path of freedom, love, beauty and truth.

No matter how lost we may get in burning fires of Hell, there is always a door to Heaven - here and now - hidden right behind and after the door of our conscious Choice.

We just have to be open again. Vulnerable. Willing to believe again. Humble enough to accept unearned grace; forgive ourselves and see inner truth.

And moving forward, we must allow the Eternal Flow to nudge us, again and again, to make the Sacred Choice to welcome Happiness again into the heart of our lives.

Make the Choice to pursue Beauty and share Love again; and to love your curiosity to relearn Truth, again and again.

Suggested Practice: Intention in Meditation or Prayer

Hold the meaning of this truth in your heart and affirm it with your mind.

“I can be free, heart-open and happy beyond understanding, Now.”

Reconnect with the wisdom that internal suffering is a choice, and reclaim the power of this Sacred Choice. See and visualise yourself as happy, free and heart-open. Flood your being with gratitude.

Alternative to a Stillness Practice: Go on a contemplative walk

Take a walk in nature with the goal or intention of locking your heart and mind into this truth. Just walk slowly at your own pace and do the same:

“I can be free, heart-open and happy beyond understanding, Now.”

Reconnect with the wisdom that internal suffering is a choice, and reclaim the power of this Sacred Choice. See and visualise yourself as happy, free and heart-open. Flood your being with gratitude.
